Comparative Study on Urban and Rural Heritage Development
2017 – Universitas Mercu Buana in cooperation with University of Indonesia
About The Program
The program offers undergraduate and graduate students a rare opportunity to gain hands-on experience in urban and rural heritage development in two ongoing projects in Indonesia. The participants will study the historic and technical backgrounds of the projects and design their own solutions under the guidance of distinguished professors from University of Indonesia and Universitas Mercu Buana.
The project based learning program provides a certificate about the accomplishment of 3 academic credits which can be transferred to ongoing degree programs of the participants in their respective home universities
About The Host Institutions
Universitas Mercu Buana (UMB) is one of the top ranking private in Jakarta. Since its establishment in 1985 it has become one of the most sought after universities engaged in teaching, research and community service. The program is available for undergaduate and graduate students of architecture, civil engineering and urban & regional planning or related fields of studies.

Study Project Sites
Naga Village (Kampung Naga) is one of the last villages where traditional Indonesian (Sundanese) village culture has remained intact. The once isolated village is located in the regency of Tasikmalaya, only 230 kilometers from the bustling metropolis of Jakarta and is now easily accessible by road transportation. Largely untouched by modern civilization, the people of Naga village follow their centuries old customs which has lured antrolopogists from all over the world to conduct research here. Equally interesting is the architecture the village. Participants of the study project will design plans to preserve this architectural heritage under the guidance of local urban planning authorities and university professors.
Old Town of Tangerang
The modern city of Tangerang is part of Jakarta’s suburban region with over 2 million inhabitants on its own. However the historic old town of Tangerang with buildings from 17th and 18th centuries still survives providing an excellent location for research on historic architecture, urban planning and various projects of urban revitalization.

Fees / Scholarships
The program is supported by Indonesia’s Ministry of Research, Technology & Higher Education which allows the organizers to offer fee exemption for a limited number of students of the partner institutions of Universitas Mercu Buana and the University of Indonesia.
- Program fee : 0 USD* / 100 USD – includes: airport pick up/drop off, transportation within Indonesia, lectures, workshops
- Accommodation fee : 100 USD includes accommodation for 8 nights (Jakarta and Kampung Naga)
